Republican State Senator Jeff Brandes (St. Petersburg) has filed SB528, the Florida Medical Marijuana Act. This bill includes some important revisions which are designed to close the loopholes that many feel are responsible for last years bill being voted down in the mid term election. Some of these revisions are:
- Parents of minors must consent if their child is to receive medical marijuana.
- Extra language has been added to specify what "debilitating medical conditions" qualify. These being: cancer, HIV/AIDS, epilepsy, ALS, multiple sclerosis and any medical condition that causes chronic wasting syndrome, pain or severe nausea.
- Medical marijuana can only be recommended by a Florida licensed medical doctor.
- Florida Department of Health can deny felons the ability to act as "caregiver" for a qualified patient.
Amendment backers (mainly People United for Medical Marijuana) have begun collecting the near 700,000 signatures needed to get the measure on the 2016 ballot.
