Following the tragic school shouting at Parkland on February 14, 2018, 11 Senators introduced the School Safety and Mental Health Services Act of 2018 to address the issue of school shootings. While the legislation is waiting vote for approval and implementation, the proposal address two main areas: improving school safety and addressing mental health needs. The Act will attempt to improve school safety by improving school infrastructure, hiring/training of school counselors, development of school safety/violence prevention programs and help school learn best practices. Addressing mental health needs covers helping school identify and treat mental illness, sharing mental health practice with schools, funding new studies to help prevent mental illness and improve federal crisis response. No date has been set yet for congressional voting.
