Researchers at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center have uncovered a link between pyrethroid pesticides and ADHD symptoms (impulsivity) in boys. When the pesticide marker was found in urine samples of 8-15 year olds, they were two to three times more likely to also have ADHD depending on the level of the marker. This result held true only for the symptoms of impulsivity and not inattentiveness. Common signs of impulsivity are : fidgeting, trouble remaining seated, inappropriate running and climbing, difficulty playing quietly, excessive talking, 'driven by a motor", interrupts others and trouble waiting his/her turn. Finding this same marker in girls was not found to be associated with these same symptoms.

Serotonin Production: Researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel have succeeded in identifying traces of a microRNA molecule (miR135) that acts on serotonin producing nerve cells. This finding is important as they were able to manipulate serotonin levels in mice by altering levels of the molecule. When this idea was tested on humans, subjects known to suffer from depression had unusually low miR135 levels. The researchers are confident this will lead to the development of a blood test for depression.
